Market
According to Canalys, the iPhone has captured a 28% share in the U.S. smartphone market in its first 6 months. This already puts it in second place behind RIM's 41% and in front of Palm's 9% total U.S. smartphone market share. Worldwide, the smartphone market as a whole grew, year-on-year by 60% in 2007; growth climbed every quarter throughout the year to reach a peak of 72% in Q4. The smartphone market is heating up and the iPhone seems positioned to take a significant chunk in the near term. (Source: Canalys estimates, © canalys.com ltd. 2008)
Gartner recently upgraded their outlook for the iPhone to include the significant enterprise market in addition to the currently burgeoning consumer market. This stems from Apple's recent announcement that the 2.0 version of the iPhone SDK, slated for a June 2008 release, will include support for enterprise technology staples like Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync (enabling access to the popular Exchange Server and push email), Cisco IPSEC VPN support for top-tier network data encryption, and WPA2 for wireless networking security. It will also add support to view Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents right on the device. These new enterprise-friendly features, especially the MS Exchange support, will bring the iPhone more on par with the feature offerings from the current enterprise leaders, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Symbian. This will open up a huge new market for consumer- and enterprise-grade iPhone compatible applications.
The industry is definitely optimistic about the iPhone as businesses begin to embrace it as not just a consumer device but as a full-featured smartphone ready for the demands of enterprise. Calls for a significant offering of applications on the iPhone are likely to increase dramatically in the near term thanks to the keen interest of both consumer and enterprise users to see the unique application possibilities the iPhone's feature-set allows for.
With the iPhone's phenomenal feature-set and underlying OS X technologies, "mobile version" no longer needs to be associated with "watered down" when it comes to features and usability. With the release of the iPhone SDK and the significant enterprise announcements for version 2.0, coupled with the iPhone's unique array of features, now is definitely the time to consider making the move to mobile with the iPhone.
