In a press release from December 12th, Apple announced that over 100 million apps have been downloaded from the Mac App Store since it’s launch less than one year ago. Just as Apple revolutionized the way we interact with and download software for our mobile devices, they are now changing how the world purchases computer software.

“With more than 100 million downloads in less than a year, the Mac App Store is the largest and fastest growing PC software store in the world” - Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing

The news of the Mac App Store’s unprecedented success, comes on the heels of Hewlett-Packard announcing a 91% drop in quarterly earnings. With Apple once again offering such industry-dominating software as AutoCAD, which returned to the Mac platform in 2010 for the first time since 1992, Apple’s market share is only expected to continue it’s upward trajectory. This leaves some brands, like HP, wondering whether or not they should pull-out of the PC manufacturing business all together. Former Hewlett-Packard CEO, Leo Apotheker, had been toying with the idea of selling, or spinning off HP’s PC business before leaving his post in September 2011. However new CEO, Meg Whitman, recently announced that HP would be hanging on to their PC business, at least for the time being. Hewlett-Packard’s personal systems category, which includes computers, declined 2% in the last quarter.

Overall the press release reinforces what most people in the industry already know, consumers love reasonably priced, and easily accessible software, something that Apple delivers to a T.
