Macworld, a leading publication on Apple products, turned to Atimi Software to develop the Macworld Daily Reader App for the iPad. The Macworld Daily Reader App is a new publication, taking cues from both the Macworld web and print magazine. Macworld and Atimi’s close working relationship throughout the development process has produced a polished final product, allowing readers to keep up-to-date with the latest Apple, Mac, iOS news, reviews and commentary.
“At each stage of the development process, Atimi worked closely with our team to define and refine features of the app,” said Jason Snell, VP & Editorial Director, Macworld. “Atimi’s keen understanding of design and technological considerations on the iOS platform has allowed us to create an app that truly represents the best of both Macworld’s print and web publications.”
"With the expectation that users will spend more than just a few moments with the Macworld Daily App, the design had to flow from the reading experience first." said Scott Michaels Vice President of Client Services at Atimi Software. "The Macworld team was very concious through the whole process that the content was king, and meeting the expectations of a Macworld reader was paramount. Rather than look at some of the more esoteric navigation schemes in use by other applications the goal for the Macworld Daily Reader was to really be a relaxed and enjoyable reading experience"
The app was designed to be much more than a representation of the Macworld website, having the reading ease of the print version with the benefits of a website, such as frequent updates, ratings, and sharing.
New formats for the articles and image galleries were defined, and became a new part of the Macworld content team's daily work.
"Macworld was great, in understanding that to produce a product like the Macworld Daily Reader that it would not 'come for free' in terms of the time to prepare the content." Said Scott Michaels. "In all cases the goal is to not introduce new workflow that will slow down or hinder the team in the content production process. Macworld has invested in tools and products to support what they do, and the app had to work as closely with the existing system as possible."
Atimi’s Orchard mobile application development framework facilitated the development of the app, including a live feed of tweets from Macworld editors.
“We feel very fortunate to have been able to work with Macworld’s knowledgeable team, and to produce and application that really represents the flagship publication for the Apple market,” said Scott Michaels, Vice President of Client Services at Atimi Software. “This app was a true collaboration, and Macworld has an intuitive sense of what their readers want. It is very refreshing to work with an expert team that is so close to and aware of its audience.”
